Minor in Deafness and Hearing Studies

As the world becomes more globalized and connected, the need for professionals who understand the issues impacting the health of various populations is growing exponentially.

As a student in the Deafness and Hearing Studies Minor, you’ll prepare to work with the deaf and hearing impaired, helping to improve their communication skills and enhancing their quality of life. You’ll examine this group from the perspectives of sociology, history, and linguistics, with key topics of study including American Sign Language, deaf culture, civil rights, and the history of the deaf community in the United States.

Designed for students interested in exploring topics related to human communication, the Deafness and Hearing Studies Minor provides students with exposure to the range of variation in persons with hearing disabilities and deafness across the lifespan. The minor is most appropriate for students interested in clinical and health-related fields (e.g., nursing, biobehavioral health, or medicine), professional fields (e.g., business, pre-law, or communications), social sciences (e.g., human development and family studies, sociology, or psychology), and education (e.g., early childhood education, special education, rehabilitation counseling).

Students from any major (except Communication Sciences and Disorders) can declare a minor in Deafness and Hearing Studies. Students in the Deafness and Hearing Studies Minor are not assigned a specific adviser. If you have any questions, please contact a CSD Academic Adviser.
