Study Abroad with HDFS
Studying abroad is a wonderful way to learn about the way different cultures, policies, and practices influence human development while having an amazing, enriching learning experience.
The HDFS department has offered three HDFS-specific study abroad programs in recent years.
Please note: not all programs are offered every year. See the Penn State Global website for current offerings, program costs, and program dates.
- HDFS in Florence
-
This program offers a unique opportunity to explore the sights, sounds, history, and culture of contemporary Florence, while taking courses on family and childhood in Italy. Activities include learning to buy fresh fruit and vegetables in the Mercato and interacting with children in Italian schools.
Students earn nine credits of HDFS 499.
- Seoul, Korea: Sociology and Culture
-
Explore the juxtaposition of the old and the new in the dynamic, changing culture of South Korea. The country has assumed an important leadership role in global issues and is now a world leader in cultural influence and technology-based innovations.
Students earn three credits of HDFS 499.
- London, United Kingdom: Adulthood and Families
-
Highlights of the trip include an East End Walking Tour, visits to the Tower Bridge and London Eye, and a day trip to the White Cliffs of Dover, all within the context of the culture, history, and diversity that affect individuals throughout adulthood.
Students earn three credits of HDFS249n or HDFS 397.
More International Opportunities
In addition to these programs, Penn State offers numerous study abroad opportunities, including extra funds for students who are Pell Grant eligible.
- Visit the Penn State Global website to learn about study abroad opportunities, and explore the funding page to learn about scholarships.
- The College of Health and Human Development also provides resources for students interested in studying abroad, as well as a list of college-specific study abroad opportunities.
Students interested in studying abroad are strongly encouraged to talk to their academic adviser early in their undergraduate career to be sure they can fit study abroad into their plans.
Additional Options for Travel and Learning
For students who don't want to go overseas or can't make one of these trips work, there are other options for travel and learning.
- Explore Penn State's Alternative Spring Break programs, which actually run all year, for service learning in a variety of locations across the United States.
- Explore City Semester Pittsburgh, a program that helps Penn State students live and intern in Pittsburgh for a semester. The program focuses on placing students in 20 hour/week internships focused on sustainability and urban living.
