Metabolic Kitchen and Children’s Eating Behavior Laboratory
An open house for the new Metabolic Kitchen and Children’s Eating Behavior Laboratory was held on November 7, 2012. This wonderful new research facility is fully operational and is directed by Kathleen Keller, assistant professor of nutritional sciences.
- Marie Kamp, Dietetic Internship director, will be retiring effective June 30, 2013.
- Shelly Nickols-Richardson, professor of nutritional sciences and graduate professor in charge, will be leaving Penn State on June 30, 2013, to assume a new position as head of the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
New York Academy of Science Career Day
- Claire Berryman (mentor Penny Kris-Etherton), Joe Ashmore (mentor Terry Hartman), and Rachel Williams (mentor Barbara Rolls) were selected to attend the Career Day at the New York Academy of Science on December 10, 2012.
Reception at EB 2013
Please join us at the Department of Nutritional Sciences reception at the American Society for Nutrition Meeting at EB in Boston on Saturday, April 20, 2013, from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in the Alcott (on the Mezzanine Level) at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel.
Iron Chef Competition
The Graduate Student Association-sponsored Iron Chef Competition to raise funds for a local food bank will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2013, from 1:30-4:00 p.m. in Henderson Building.

Annual Alumni Brunch in April
Please join fellow alumni, faculty members, and students at the annual alumni brunch on Sunday, April 14, at 11:00 a.m. at the Nittany Lion Inn. Gordon Jensen, professor and head of the Department of Nutritional Sciences, will provide an update of happenings in the department, and Barbra Rolls, professor of nutritional sciences and Helen A. Guthrie Chair in Nutrition, will discuss “Feeling Full on Fewer Calories.” If you are in State College on Saturday, April 13, I hope that you will join us in cheering on the NDAS Team and other teams as they compete in the annual “Iron Chef PSU” cooking competition sponsored by the Nutrition Graduate Student Association. The competition will be held from 1:30-4:00 p.m. in Henderson Building.

Last year at the brunch, NDAS announced a project to brighten and enhance the lobby of the Chandlee Building, the home of the Nutritional Sciences Department. Thanks to all of you who supported this project so far. We are still seeking additional support to purchase furnishings and decorative accents to upgrade what is the first impression for visitors and guests to the department.

Joseph Kindler, BS (Applied Sciences option) is working on his Ph.D. degree in the Department of Foods and Nutrition at the University of Georgia.
Patricia Casey, BS (Applied Sciences option) is working as a nutritionist for WIC at Maternal and Family Health Services.
Amanda Kopetsky, RD, LDN (Applied Sciences option) is working in nutrition education at The Food Trust, a nonprofit organization in Philadelphia.
Emma Cowie, RD, CNSC, LD (Applied Sciences option) is working as a clinical RD for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Inborn Errors of Metabolism at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. She passed the Certified Nutrition Support Clinician exam in October of this year and is planning her wedding for next September in State College.
Cory O’Brien, BS (Applied Sciences option) is a second-year master's student at the University of Pittsburgh within the Coordinated Master's in Dietetics Program. He created and field-tested a MyPlate curriculum that is now being implemented by Giant Eagle and charter schools in the Pittsburgh area. It is titled: "HealthSmart - MyPlate Food Guide Curriculum."
Jessica Forsty, BS (Applied Sciences option) is a nutritionist for the Fairfax County government's Head Start and Early Head Start Program in Northern Virginia.
Kelsey Markham, RD (Applied Sciences option) completed her dietetic internship at West Virginia University Hospitals in June. She is working as a pediatric dietitian in an intensive care unit as well as a clinical dietitian in adult general medicine for West Virginia University Healthcare.
Jacqueline Nester, RD, LDN (Applied Sciences option) is working full-time as a campus dietitian in Bethlehem, PA. In addition to her work as a dietitian, she is the website coordinator for the Lehigh Valley Dietetic Association, attended FNCE in Philadelphia this past October for the first time (highly recommend!), and recently bought a house!
Melissa Grindle, BS (Applied Sciences option) is currently a dietetic intern at the University of Maryland-College Park. She has been contributing to blog posts for the Society for Nutrition Education "Communications" blog and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics "Eat Right" blog.
Jessica Berglund, RD, LDN (Applied Sciences option) is working as a clinical dietitian for Phoebe Berks long-term care/rehabilitation facility. She graduated in May with highest distinction and honor in biobehavioral health.
Chantal Kropp, RD, LDN (Applied Sciences option) graduated from Geisinger Medical Center Dietetic Internship in June 2012. She is now employed full-time at Susquehanna Health System working in an acute care setting at Williamsport Regional Medical Center and at a long-term care facility at Muncy Valley Skilled Nursing Unit.
Erik J. Radick, BS (Basic Sciences option) is currently pursuing a doctoral degree (M.D.) at American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine.
Shelly Marcus, MPH, RD (Applied Sciences option) is working in international nutrition research at Tufts University.
Caitlin (Doutt) Boland, RD, LD (Applied Sciences option) is working as a cardiovascular outpatient and wellness dietitian in Houston, TX.
Gina Riggio, DTR (Applied Sciences option) is working as a research technician in medical research (infectious diseases) at the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics at Penn State.
Alexandria (Blatt) Hast, Ph.D., RD (Applied Sciences option) earned her Ph.D. degree at Penn State in 2011 and is working in the food industry for Campbell Soup Company. She got married in May 2012!
