The HHD Faculty Sustainability Award recognizes extraordinary achievement and service in advancing global sustainable development goals while carrying out the college’s efforts to maximize health, optimize quality of life, and enhance human potential for all people and populations.

Our vision is that the College of Health and Human Development will be a world leader in sustainability through our teaching, research, and outreach. Penn State defines Sustainability as "the simultaneous pursuit of human health and happiness, environmental quality, and economic well-being for current and future generations." The award will be given with consideration of success in one or more of the following areas:

1. Teaching: Enhancing the understanding of sustainable practices in all aspects of human health and producing graduates prepared to apply these practices at work and at home by offering students an extraordinary education supported by curricular and co-curricular innovation.

2. Research: Creating knowledge related to sustainable activity in health and its impact on society, from local to world-wide, by reinforcing the strong culture of discovery that exists among the College of Health and Human Development faculty and, more broadly, generating a culture of sustainable actions.

3. Outreach: Working with all aspects of the health care, social services, and related communities to provide intellectual leadership in sustainable practices to spread resiliency.

All full-time College faculty of all ranks, except those serving on the selection committee are eligible for this award.

College faculty, staff, and students may submit nominations for the award. Self-nominations will also be accepted.

To submit a nomination, please complete the on-line nomination form and provide the following documentation:

  • The name of the nominator, the name of the nominee, and a brief supporting statement regarding the contributions of the nominee.

Selection of the award recipient will be based on the quality of the nomination(s).

Recipient of this award will be made by a selection committee which will consist of the Assistant/Associate Dean for Operations, the Chair of the Sustainability Council, and the award recipient from the prior year.

Recipient will be notified early in the fall semester. A recognition gift and monetary award will be presented to the recipient during the fall HHD Annual Awards Ceremony.
