Kelly McCready

THON executive director follows her passion for helping children and families in Washington, D.C.

‘Care to dance’ anyone? This amazing alumna was a VIP on campus just a few years ago. Kelly McCready '19 was appointed the executive director of Penn State THON 2019 and found her passion connecting with donors and fundraising—not something that everyone has the heart and passion to do. And in true Penn State fashion, McCready continues to make dance moves of her own, following her career passion in our nation’s capital.

McCready’s studies in Human Development and Family Studies, her capstone internship, and other experiences at Penn State all fueled her desire to help children and families in need. The skills she developed and the connections she made helped position her for her current role in supporting children’s healthcare in Washington, D.C.

Exploring, making connections with other students and staff, having important conversations, and being open to others' experiences (and maybe spending a little time dancing along the way!) can lead to amazing and rewarding opportunities on campus and beyond.

As the development coordinator at the Children’s National Hospital Foundation, McCready is responsible for connecting with donor corporate partners and community organizations who share a passion for promoting equitable healthcare opportunities for children and families in the D.C. area. She coordinates events and campaigns to raise money for Children’s National so that programs can be funded and staffed to serve those in need. She also manages their social media and a blog to spread awareness about the difference these programs make for children in the community. She maintains relationships with patient families while on their treatment and life journeys. Many give back to those hospital programs that have helped them so much.

McCready’s natural enthusiasm, creativity, and drive have carried her to a position in which she can make a difference in the world, just as she did managing THON 2019. In her spare time, McCready loves to be in touch with nature, appreciate the world around her, read, and continue to be a lifelong learner. While some may feel intimidated by Penn State’s large size, McCready believes that everyone can find their own space and passion at her alma mater. Exploring, making connections with other students and staff, having important conversations, and being open to others' experiences (and maybe spending a little time dancing along the way!) can lead to amazing and rewarding opportunities on campus and beyond.
